Implications of the Election of François Hollande

Introduction

On Sunday, François Hollande defeated the incumbent Nicholas Sarkozy in the election for the French presidency. Hollande is the first Socialist elected to France’s highest office since Mitterand won two elections in the 80’s. He’s an inspiring orator: French speakers, check out this ad. Although Hollande was the predicted winner for many months, the election tightened considerably after the first round of voting that concluded mid-April, as Sarkozy was able to appeal to the far-right Front National constituents who no longer could vote for Marine le Pen.
